❥ Character Information

Character Name: Raphtalia
Character Age: 10
Character Species: Demi-Human. More specifically, she's a human with raccoon features (ears and tail).
Current Health: Healthy
Outfit: She wears a simple grey and red dress, with long sleeves underneath. There's also metal shackles around her wrists and a metal collar around her neck that were never removed during her time in slavery. Her design can also be seen here.

❥ Folkmore Roles & Attributes

Skills: She is good at fighting monsters, and has a high pain tolerance.
Canon Abilities: None, although she has a magical slave crest on her chest that makes defying orders impossible. But this only works if her assigned Master is giving orders that she refuses to follow. Otherwise it's useless.
Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: Raphtalia can turn into a raccoon at will. In her normal form though, she'll gain dark markings under her eyes and sharper nails. She already has raccoon ears and a tail, so that won't change.
Role Reasoning: Raphtalia was bought by Naofumi as a slave, to serve as a fighter on his behalf. She's not very confident, withdrawn, and more or less just wants to stay out of trouble. As of right now, she has no self-esteem or respect for herself. Also, anyone could push her around or use her for their own needs. But I would like for her to eventually stand up for herself, learn that she can set boundaries and continue to support others but not be forced into it. She is someone who can offer comfort and support in the most difficult of times, and for that reason I think she'd make a really good Familiar.

What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?

Losing her parents is Raphtalia's most traumatic memory, even more than being sold into slavery. All she remembers from the incident is her parents carrying her away from the monster attacks, while swarms of monsters destroy their village. As they run they are pursued by a giant three-headed dog monster, and as Raphtalia and her parents reach the edge of a cliff, her parents realize they have no where left to run. To save Raphtalia, they push her over the cliff so she can fall into the sea, and they let themselves get eaten by the monster instead. Raphtalia's final memory is seeing her parents getting eaten alive by the dog monster, and it's a memory so vivid she has nightmares about it often.

What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?

Raphtalia is pretty young, so she doesn't really have a moral code as of yet. However, her parents did instill in her the mindset of "smiling through hard times". Raphtalia takes their message to heart after monsters destroy Raphtalia's village and kill her parents. She keeps a smile on her face no matter what, refusing to continue crying over her loss. This attitude of staying positive helps the villagers also try to move forward and rebuild as well. However, being tortured and traumatized after being sold into slavery, Raphtalia finds that it's more and more difficult to keep that positive attitude, and stops smiling altogether.

What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise. Raphtalia struggles with confidence a lot. This is, of course, due to her being sold into slavery as she was once a curious and confident child. After her village was destroyed, she tried to give an uplifting speech to her fellow villagers to encourage them to rebuild. But shortly after, she and her fellow demi-humans were captured and sold into slavery. And Raphtalia in particular was sold to a cruel, sadistic man who delighted in torturing his slaves until he killed them. Raphtalia refused to scream or cry out during these "torture sessions", but after being hurt for so long it wrecked her self-confidence, and she became more shy and withdrawn. She's afraid to express her needs, like if she's hungry, and afraid to speak out. She does try to defy Naofumi a bit, especially when he forces her into situations she's afraid of, but even that results in pain due to her magical slave crests that makes disobeying her assigned master a painful experience. So she really doesn't have much say in what she wants.

If your character could change one thing about their past, what would it be and why? Or why not?

If Raphtalia could change one thing, she'd find a way to free her friend - Rifana - from slavery. Raphtalia has a lot of guilt over not being able to help her friend, who was on her deathbed before Raphtalia was taken and sold to another slave trader. She has a hard time forgiving herself over what happened to her Rifana, and that her friend never got the chance to see her home's flag again - a symbol of hope for all demi-humans, who are treated as a second-class citizens in Melromarc, Raphtalia's home country. Raphtalia tried to give her friend hope before her passing by making a tiny makeshift flag, which gave Rifana some comfort, but Raphtalia was taken away the next day and Rifana died shortly afterward.
