Backtagging: Fine with backtagging and slower paced tagging
Fourth walling: Typically fine with it, just expect her to be confused
Thread hopping : Ask me first
Content warnings and sensitive subjects: I'm pretty open to most sensitive topics, but I would like to be warned for eye gore or anything happening to eyes please!
Anything else: None

★ In Character Permissions ★

Physical affection: She's going to be very wary of any physical touch, and may react badly to suddenly being grabbed or pulled into a hug. Small physical gestures like holding hands she doesn't mind as much.
Romance: Not really looking for romance at this time with Raphtalia, as she's young and has had a violent history.
Violence: I would like to be talked to OOCly first if your character decides to attack Raphtalia, as she has a lot of trauma involving violence.
Injuries : I'm okay with minor injuries, but major injuries (such as a life-threatening or crippling wound) I would like to plot first please!
Death: Ask first before killing Raphtalia
Telepathy and mind-reading: Please ask first so I can give details about Raphtalia's state of mind.
Content warnings and sensitive subjects related to the character: Child slavery is a big part of Raphtalia's character - it can be visibly seen from the metal shackles and collar she wears around her neck. And while she won't likely bring up the fact that she's a slave, at least not without some prying, she'll probably bring up her "master" in threads. Also, due to Raphtalia being a demi-human, topics of racism may come up as well since demi-humans are treated as second-class citizens in Raphtalia's world. There's also a lot of violence in Raphtalia's world, and she may bring up her deceased parents that were killed by a monster, or the fact that she was previously being used to fight monsters on her master's behalf.
Content warnings and sensitive subjects this character won't be involved in: Any sexual topics I would like to avoid with her.

❥ Folkmore Roles & Attributes

Skills: She is good at fighting monsters, and has a high pain tolerance.
Canon Abilities: None, although she has a magical slave crest on her chest that makes defying orders impossible. But this only works if her assigned Master is giving orders that she refuses to follow. Otherwise it's useless.
Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: Raphtalia can turn into a raccoon at will. In her normal form though, she'll gain dark markings under her eyes and sharper nails. She already has raccoon ears and a tail, so that won't change.
Role Reasoning: Raphtalia was bought by Naofumi as a slave, to serve as a fighter on his behalf. She's not very confident, withdrawn, and more or less just wants to stay out of trouble. As of right now, she has no self-esteem or respect for herself. Also, anyone could push her around or use her for their own needs. But I would like for her to eventually stand up for herself, learn that she can set boundaries and continue to support others but not be forced into it. She is someone who can offer comfort and support in the most difficult of times, and for that reason I think she'd make a really good Familiar.
❥ Personality

Please choose one of the follow options for your personality section. Please clarify which option you have picked and, if option 2, which questions you are answering:

Option 1. Summarize your character's personality in general and what their full potential would look like to them and what they would be willing to go through to meet that potential and what gaining that potential would mean to them. 400-800 word requirement.

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?
  • Losing her parents is Raphtalia's most traumatic memory, even more than being sold into slavery. All she remembers from the incident is her parents carrying her away from the monster attacks, while swarms of monsters destroy their village. As they run they are pursued by a giant three-headed dog monster, and as Raphtalia and her parents reach the edge of a cliff, her parents realize they have no where left to run. To save Raphtalia, they push her over the cliff so she can fall into the sea, and they let themselves get eaten by the monster instead. Raphtalia's final memory is seeing her parents getting eaten alive by the dog monster, and it's a memory so vivid she has nightmares about it often.

  • What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?
  • Raphtalia is pretty young, so she doesn't really have a moral code as of yet. However, her parents did instill in her the mindset of "smiling through hard times". Raphtalia takes their message to heart after monsters destroy Raphtalia's village and kill her parents. She keeps a smile on her face no matter what, refusing to continue crying over her loss. This attitude of staying positive helps the villagers also try to move forward and rebuild as well. However, being tortured and traumatized after being sold into slavery, Raphtalia finds that it's more and more difficult to keep that positive attitude, and stops smiling altogether.

  • What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise. Raphtalia struggles with confidence a lot. This is, of course, due to her being sold into slavery as she was once a curious and confident child. After her village was destroyed, she tried to give an uplifting speech to her fellow villagers to encourage them to rebuild. But shortly after, she and her fellow demi-humans were captured and sold into slavery. And Raphtalia in particular was sold to a cruel, sadistic man who delighted in torturing his slaves until he killed them. Raphtalia refused to scream or cry out during these "torture sessions", but after being hurt for so long it wrecked her self-confidence, and she became more shy and withdrawn. She's afraid to express her needs, like if she's hungry, and afraid to speak out. She does try to defy Naofumi a bit, especially when he forces her into situations she's afraid of, but even that results in pain due to her magical slave crests that makes disobeying her assigned master a painful experience. So she really doesn't have much say in what she wants.

  • If your character could change one thing about their past, what would it be and why? Or why not?
  • If Raphtalia could change one thing, she'd find a way to free her friend - Rifana - from slavery. Raphtalia has a lot of guilt over not being able to help her friend, who was on her deathbed before Raphtalia was taken and sold to another slave trader. She has a hard time forgiving herself over what happened to her Rifana, and that her friend never got the chance to see her home's flag again - a symbol of hope for all demi-humans, who are treated as a second-class citizens in Melromarc, Raphtalia's home country. Raphtalia tried to give her friend hope before her passing by making a tiny makeshift flag, which gave Rifana some comfort, but Raphtalia was taken away the next day and Rifana died shortly afterward.

    Personality:

Raphtalia is a fearful, shy, and withdrawn girl. Her personality is shaped by the horrors she faced after the first Wave destroyed her village and forever changed her life.

Before the Wave, Raphtalia was a cheerful girl living happily with her parents and her two demi-human friends, Keel and Rifana. Despite the discrimination that demi-humans faced from the rest of the human population, Raphtalia's village remained peaceful. Other than the occasional monster, the children of the village were never in any kind of serious danger.

And then the Wave happened. Monsters overran her village, slaughtering the demi-humans who couldn't get away fast enough. Raphtalia's parents tried to carry her to safety, but they were chased down by a giant three-headed dog. In order to save Raphtalia, they pushed her off a cliff's edge into the ocean. Raphtalia's final memory of her parents was them sacrificing themselves as a distraction for the giant dog monster.

This moment is forever burned into Raphtalia's mind, causing her fear and anxiety. She has constant nightmares about watching her parents die, causing her to cry and scream at night. She's terrified of fighting monsters and has to be forced to attack, even when that threat could potentially kill her. She especially doesn't want to kill monsters that bleed, because it reminds her too much of the bloodshed and violence that the Wave caused her village. Despite this, her fear of Naofumi leaving her behind prompts her to fight, even though the idea of fighting is terrifying to her.

A lot of Raphtalia's actions are guided by what she thinks her parents would want her to do if they were still alive. While devastated by the loss of her family, Raphtalia remembers that her dad told her to smile through hard times. So Raphtalia hides her sadness, putting a smile on instead - even if the smile isn't genuine. While never the type to be a leader, she motivates the other villagers to rebuild what they've lost, and helps raise the flag of their village. She perhaps takes her father's words a little too literally, because instead of letting herself grieve, she buries those negative emotions and puts a smile on her face instead.

What really breaks Raphtalia though, is slavery. Before the remaining demi-humans could rebuild their village, they're rounded up and sold as slaves. Raphtalia, along with her friend, Rifana, are sold to Idol Rabier, who likes to torture his slaves for entertainment. Rabier tortures Raphtalia and Rifana daily, chaining them up and whipping them. Eventually, Rabier gets frustrated that Raphtalia keeps on smiling, just like her parents told her to do. When Raphtalia does get to rest, she tries to comfort her friend, who was getting sicker and weaker each day. Raphtalia tries to encourage Rifana to not lose hope, making a makeshift flag of their village to give to Rifana. The next day, Rifana succumbs to her illness and Raphtalia is sold again before she realizes her friend is dead.

Sick, weak from torture, and thoroughly broken, Raphtalia becomes a shell of the cheerful and kind girl she once was. She can no longer put on a smile for others or herself. Her friends are gone, her family is dead, and she's forced to endure a life of slavery alone. With no chance of escaping and rebuilding their village, Raphtalia loses all hope. She's endured more horrors than most adults have seen in their lifetime, and it breaks Raphtalia's spirit.

When Naofumi decides to buy her, she's understandably fearful of him. She's experienced just how cruel her owners can be, and she fears that she's destined for a life of more pain and torture. That's why when he buys her clothes and feeds her, the gesture completely surprises her. It's been a long time since anyone's treated her with any kindness, especially a human. While he does force her to fight, he never pushes her past her limits, and generally tries to tend to her needs. At this point in Raphtalia's life, even simple pleasures - like eating a kid's meal or getting a ball to play with - mean a great deal to her, because before she had absolutely nothing.

She still has trouble adjusting to Naofumi's kindness though. She's incredibly shy, flinches easily because she expects pain and not say, a pat on the head. Loud voices scare her. She's always looking down and not really watching where she's going, because she doesn't like to make eye contact. Despite her trauma making her grow up more quickly, she's still very much a child. Her excitement over eating a children's meal, wanting to play with a ball, even resisting trying to take medicine because it's too bitter, all show that Raphtalia hasn't grown all the way up just yet.

Raphtalia still remains a curious girl, and strong-willed as well. She doesn't like to show "weakness" in front of Naofumi, such as saying she's not hungry when her stomach's growling, or saying that she doesn't want a ball to play with when she clearly does. Still, Naofumi ends up being the one who comforts her when her fear and trauma get the best of her. And he's also the one who starts to slowly bring her out of her shell, training her to get strong enough to help him fend off the next Wave of Calamity.
